Creating a safe work environment is absolutely essential both for a business and its employees.
In purely financial terms, work premises contain thousands – if not hundreds of thousands – of pounds worth of valuable equipment. And if that equipment is damaged or stolen it creates huge problems for the business. Even if the equipment is insured, it will take time to source replacements which will inevitably have a serious impact on meeting deadlines for customer orders or fulfilling contracts.
Tied up with all that is the reputational cost. If a business cannot fulfil an order for whatever reason, it may lose the client and word may also get out about the company’s lack of reliability.
The repercussions are significant which is why security is paramount for a business’ success – and why choosing the right security is so important. But what is the difference between a static guard and a security guard?
A static guard’s principal role is to protect property from vandalism, theft and security breaches. They are usually based in one place – such as the entrance or exit of a building – and their very presence act as a deterrent to thieves or vandals. Static guards are ideal for businesses which need constant, detailed monitoring such as warehouses, factories or office buildings.
Static guards will ensure only authorised people are allowed access to premises and can check to ensure nothing is taken into a building – or taken out – without permission.
They may use CCTV or other surveillance equipment to keep a watchful eye on the site enabling them to take prompt action should a difficult situation arise.
A static guard is also the public face of any business, the first point of contact for many visitors so their persona needs to be both professional and friendly.
A security guard, by contrast, has a more roaming role. They will move around a premises to check it and the area for suspicious activity. Often in a marked car, they provide a visible presence to deter criminals and some security guards use dogs on patrol to discourage or catch would-be intruders.
Security guards are trained professionals who know how to handle unwanted visitors and breaches of security. They can respond quickly to situations such as burglaries, fires or vandal attacks as well as medical emergencies and are proficient at implementing safety rules such as compliance with fire codes of practice.
Security guards are the eyes and ears of the business, keeping it and its employees safe and sound.
