Working as a security guard is a highly responsible role. Its principal purpose is to protect the public as well as keeping a watchful eye on buildings to ensure they are not damaged or subjected to criminal activity. It is, therefore, perhaps unsurprising that strict regulations govern who can work in the industry.
Everyone who works as a security guard in the UK must have an SIA – Security Industry Authority – licence. Under the Private Security Industry Act 2001, it is a criminal offence to work without one and that rule applies to anyone who works in the field, from door supervision to event security or from security officers to dog handlers.
SIA courses are designed to educate applicants across a range of topics relating to the industry including health and safety, first aid, communication skills, conflict resolution and relevant legislation.
The cost of a SIA course can vary according to which area you are pursuing and they usually take between four and six days. However, once obtained it can open the door to numerous employment opportunities including working as a CCTV supervisor, door security at nightclubs or pubs, monitoring and marshalling events or providing security for buildings.
After completing an accredited training course, you can apply for your licence on the UK government website. The cost of the application is £184 but it should be pointed out that completing the training course does not automatically guarantee you will get a licence.
Checks will be carried out on your criminal record, although you may still be able to get a SIA licence if you have committed certain criminal offences. The crucial issue is whether you are considered to be a risk to the public or if you have demonstrated dishonest behaviour. For example, if your record shows offences such as assault or grievous bodily harm, this may illustrate a pattern of violent behaviour. This would make you unsuitable to work in the private security industry, which can sometimes involve dealing with hostile members of the public. Equally, you might be refused a licence if you have behaved dishonestly. However, if you have a single offence on your record which dates back several years and for which you were given a fine as a penalty, you might still be granted a licence. The SIA licence is an endorsement which says you are a fit and proper person to work as a security guard.
It usually takes about three weeks for your licence application to be processed although it can take up to six weeks if additional security checks are needed. Once granted, it will be valid for three years before needing to be renewed.
